a. missed wavves and ganglians (lawrence)
b. missed box elders (lawrence)
c. missed smith westerns & girls (kc)
d. skipped on autolux (lawrence)
I’d rather be at shows than at parties because at least when I show up I know what to do–listen, enjoy myself, and maybe take pictures and reflect on it (or get shitfaced drunk and go home with someone and not remember at all?). But I just can’t swing it anymore, I feel pissed about it too, and I keep this blog as a means of feeling less guilty about not having what I want.
The next show I am really looking forward to is Birthday Suits at the Jackpot. I missed them twice I think in pittsburgh and I’ve gotten a great impression of them from friends who know their shit, and enjoyed their half of the split with Marked Men. If anything gets in the way of me and the Birthday Suits show it will be THE LAST STRAW, for fuck’s sake. I’m fucking pissed that anyone who would be into these lawrence shows already LIVE IN LAWRENCE. Why can’t I make some friends who would be psyched to go to the following shows that I missed? UGH. I always knew I had something special in relation to the music scene in Pittsburgh, but didn’t realize how sweet it was until I came to KC.
I guess the only reason why I am so bummed out is because music & going to shows gave me a lot of confidence about the person I am today so losing touch with it sucks. Anyways, here are a couple songs, one is Birthday Suits from the Seven Inches For Your Ex split 7″ w/ Marked Men. The other is Ganglians cause I get a lot of compliments on my hair, it never gets old, I appreciate it. I’M DEDICATING THIS SONG TO ALL YOU COMPLIMENTERS. THX.

ROBBED!
Current mood: annoyed
Well… our van was broken into in Richmond, VA. It sucks. The crackhead stole some of Jose’s clothes and his passport, a microkorg keyboard, our sampler, and Todd’s extra strings (!?). We’re getting everything sorted now — new passport expedited, new sampler sent out to Chicago where we’ll be for friday (RIBFEST) — but godDAMN it never feels good to be robbed. Violating, angry-making and all that. Anyway, things seem to be righting themselves (knock on wood), but if you see us in the coming final week of our tour, come give us a hug. We could use it, bigtime.Love,
HS

I know, I know, those times when I see awesome shows and don’t share the meatiness with you are quite frustrating. But I assure you, as much as you think that you don’t like Xiu Xiu, or maybe you’re on the fence about Centipede Eest, they are very competent musicians–competent enough to make me grin and frown all in the same night. Yes! that much breadth. The Centipede show on the 23rd was definitely fun. Xiu Xiu tonight delivered beyond belief.
it’s good to be back in pittsburgh again. Yeah so I didn’t post the pictures I took of shows in kansas city…well that’s on my flickr. Consider this post as a place mark. Check back in a few days for my newfound love with Xiu Xiu.

Starting tomorrow, Pittsburghers can expect to be thrown out of orbit by the following concerts:
- 8/8 – Tapes ‘n Tapes – Club Cafe
- 8/8 & 8/9 – New American Music Union Festival – details here
- 8/10 – Deerhunter – Garfield Artworks
- 8/11 – We Are Scientists w/ Oxford Collapse – Diesel
- 8/12 – Vivian Girls w/ Crystal Stilts & HARANGUE – Rickety House (on melwood, right off center ave)
- 8/13 – Oneida w/ Italian Ice – 31st St. Pub
- 8/13 – This Bike Is a Pipe Bomb – 3449 Melwood St.
- 8/15 – Midnite Snake – Rickety House
In other news, the octopus project show on monday in KC was killer. the openers sucked though. might do a picture post later.

Yeah, so that crazy gap where I didn’t post–well, I made things. One of the most recent things involves a gouache portrait book including one of the people that made me want to join the radio station. She’s incredibly smart within the realm of physics but knows her music enough to make all the dudes out there jizz themselves. Excuse my language. anyway, I have good news and bad news.
The bad news is that I couldn’t make it to Octopus Project & Enon. I bought my tickets a week in advance but somehow my retarded mind didn’t prepare for my test a week in advance. I ended up spending last night studying (which paid off). okay, so maybe I wouldn’t have had immense fun according to one of my friends who went–but the pictures could have been great! I am as perturbed as anyone; I’m starting to think my school is rather perverse, or maybe I just suck at balancing the music-art-academic triumvirate which completely owns my life. The good news, you will be glad to hear, is much greater in magnitude than the bad news. tomorrow night shall be spent in sober preparation of studying for the test to legitimize my presence at the radio station….which means I can have ridiculous access to music. I can’t share it all with you, no. But I can pass out some gems not dictated by popular blog music–they are simply musical discovery whether they be new or old! not necessarily “hip”, no femur but definitely some Head of Femur.
I don’t know what to do now except give you my favorite songs of the moment by two very incredible musicians who are hitting the ‘burgh incredibly soon. If you are out there GO SEE THEM, do it! do it! John K. Sampson of the Weakerthans and Phil Elverum of Mount Eerie (formerly known as the Microphones) here:
the Microphones — the Moon [from the glow, pt. 2] coming on October 30th to Garfield artworks
the Weakerthans — Night Windows [from Reunion Tour] coming on October 27th to Mr. Small’s
I am so awful at going to shows that I can’t say I’m going to see both of them but luckily the next week will be forgiving so I can catch one. Also I would like to point out that I haven’t posted music since July 25th. What kind of music blog is this, you wonder? the one where I wonder the same thing.
